Hyperemesis Gravidarum: When Pregnancy Feels Like Survival

If you’re here, chances are pregnancy doesn’t feel like the glowing, joyful experience you may have hoped for. Instead, it may feel like survival. If you’re battling Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG), I want you to hear this first: you are not alone, and this is not in your head.

As a mom who has personally walked through HG in all three of my pregnancies, I (Kristian) understand how isolating, exhausting, and even frightening it can be. And as a doula, I want to offer you both information and compassion as you navigate this journey.

What is Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG)?

Hyperemesis Gravidarum is a severe form of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy that goes far beyond typical “morning sickness.” While many women experience some level of nausea, HG is characterized by:

  • Persistent, intense nausea

  • Frequent vomiting (often multiple times per day)

  • Inability to keep food or fluids down

  • Weight loss during pregnancy

  • Dehydration and electrolyte imbalances

HG can impact every aspect of your life—your physical health, emotional well-being, relationships, and ability to function day-to-day. It’s not just discomfort—it’s a medical condition that often requires support and, in many cases, treatment.

Morning Sickness vs. Hyperemesis Gravidarum

Not all pregnancy nausea is the same. Morning sickness is usually mild, comes and goes, and rarely affects your daily life. Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), however, is more severe — it can cause persistent vomiting, dehydration, and weight loss. A key sign of HG is if you can’t keep food or fluids down or your energy is significantly affected. Early recognition and support can make a big difference, so don’t hesitate to reach out for help.

What Causes HG?

The truth is, there isn’t one single clear cause of HG—but research and clinical experience point to several contributing factors.

Hormonal Factors

Many experts believe HG is strongly linked to rising levels of hormones such as hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) and estrogen. Some women appear to be more sensitive to these hormonal changes than others.

Genetic Predisposition

If your mother or sister experienced HG, your chances of having it may be higher. There seems to be a hereditary component that researchers are continuing to explore.

Gastrointestinal Sensitivity

Some women may have a more sensitive digestive system, making them more reactive to the changes pregnancy brings.

Environmental & Lifestyle Factors

While not a direct cause, certain environmental factors may worsen HG symptoms, including:

  • Strong smells (food, cleaning products, perfumes)

  • Stress or emotional strain

  • Nutrient deficiencies prior to pregnancy

  • Exposure to environmental toxins

Nervous System & Sensory Overload

For some women, HG can feel like their entire system is overwhelmed. Heightened sensitivity to light, sound, smell, and movement can all play a role in symptom severity.

Ways to Cope and Find Relief

While HG often cannot be “cured” during pregnancy, there are ways to support your body and reduce the intensity of symptoms. What works can vary from person to person, so it’s okay if it takes time to find your rhythm.

Medical Support

Please don’t hesitate to seek medical care. You deserve support.

  • Anti-nausea medications (like Zofran or Diclegis)

  • IV fluids for dehydration

  • Electrolyte support

  • Monitoring weight and overall health

There is no shame in needing medical help. Taking care of yourself is also taking care of your baby.

Gentle Nutrition Strategies

  • Eat small, frequent meals when possible

  • Focus on bland, easy-to-digest foods

  • Try cold foods if smells are triggering

  • Sip fluids throughout the day rather than drinking large amounts at once

Even tiny amounts count. Survival is enough right now.

Natural & Complementary Support

Some women find relief with:

  • Ginger (tea, chews, or capsules)

  • Vitamin B6 supplementation

  • Acupressure (like wrist bands)

  • Peppermint or lemon aromatherapy

Always check with your provider before starting supplements. I would like to add that these natural supports are more likely to help with common morning sickness, not as much for HG. Although they would be worth trying still!

Environmental Adjustments

  • Keep your space well-ventilated

  • Avoid strong scents when possible

  • Rest in dim, quiet environments

Reducing sensory input can make a significant difference.

Emotional & Practical Support

HG is not just physical—it can take a deep emotional toll.

  • Ask for help with meals, childcare, and household tasks

  • Connect with other moms who understand HG

  • Work with a doula who can advocate for you and support you holistically

You are not meant to carry this alone.

supporting your body after hg

Recovering from Hyperemesis Gravidarum doesn’t stop once the baby arrives. Your body may still feel depleted, and gentle care is key. Focus on nourishing foods that you can tolerate, staying hydrated, and resting whenever possible. Listen to your body’s signals, and don’t hesitate to ask for help from loved ones or a postpartum doula. Healing is a gradual process, and honoring your body’s needs is just as important as caring for your new baby.

A Gentle Word to Your Heart

If you’re struggling with HG, you may feel disconnected from your pregnancy. You may not feel the excitement you expected. You may even feel fear, dread, or numbness.

That does not make you a bad mother.

Bonding doesn’t always happen during pregnancy—and that’s okay. Love can grow in its own time, often in quiet, unexpected ways.

Right now, your job is not to feel a certain way. Your job is to get through each day with as much support and grace as possible.

You Are Seen

HG can feel invisible to others, especially when pregnancy is often portrayed as beautiful and glowing. But your experience is real. Your struggle matters.

If no one has told you this today:

  • You are incredibly strong

  • You are doing the best you can

  • You are not alone in this

And there is hope on the other side of this season.

If you’re in the central North Carolina area and looking for compassionate, informed support during pregnancy, we would be honored to walk alongside you.
