MORE ABOUT Amy

I’d like to tell you a little about myself. I’m a southern girl through and through, having been born and raised in North Carolina and living way out in “the boonies” for many years on family land. My husband and true love, Wendell, and I met in college and were married in October of 1989. The Lord has blessed us richly in life, marriage, and family relationships, plus He gave us 4 children (all grown now), which is exactly what I always wanted! God saved me and changed my heart when I was 12, and His hand has been evident on my life every step of the journey since then. He specifically used my children as instruments of growth in my heart and refined my faith through my years of being a mother.

I had always been a reader and researcher of natural health, from the time I was expecting our oldest child, and knew that I had a passion for birth in particular. Wendell and I attended a Bradley Birth Method class, which definitely pulled my heart toward birth even more. I even contemplated training to teach that myself someday, but God had other plans. I kept teaching piano for a while and raising our children, and during this time I also learned about essential oils. As I pursued natural solutions for our health, they became a huge part of our “medicine cabinet,” and we’ve all had some major health victories using them the last 8 years. (My doula training even included specific modules on using oils in pregnancy, labor, and with children, so if you’re interested in that, I’m happy to offer it!)

My own birth experiences were quite varied. Our first, Jessica, arrived 6 weeks early, was born in the hospital, and stayed in the NICU for 2 weeks. I was fiercely determined to exclusively breastfeed her, and she thrived once she came home. Ryan, our next, had a very different story – my water started leaking a week before he was born!

We were attending a free-standing birth center, and they permitted me to wait till he arrived naturally. I was so thankful, since I was opposed to being induced. With Emily, our third, we were still at the birth center, and this time I was able to have a water birth. It was wonderful! And with Timothy, our fourth, I planned to birth in the water again, but he arrived 3 days before my 37th week, which meant he had to be born at the hospital. The experience was very different from our first hospital birth, however - much more peaceful, with our midwife supporting us. Each of my birth experiences refined my passion for the birth process and was a stepping stone toward my eventual decision to train for being a doula. I love supporting mothers through the process of pregnancy, birth, and beyond! It is a great joy to come alongside you and empower you as I serve your needs and wishes. I believe birth is one of the most powerful and sacred experiences that we women share!

A few other things that I love are reading, travelling, taking walks on the beach with my hubby and doggie Nala, and sipping hot coffee in front of a warm fire. Our family relationships are vitally important to us, and we’re very blessed to share a closeness and a like-mindedness that is surely a gift from God. I’ve assisted both my daughters with births and absolutely love being able to “mother” new mothers with whatever needs they present. I believe every mom deserves to be supported and uplifted with love and compassion during labor, birth, and throughout the postpartum period. I pledge to be that support and care for you as your doula, and I commit to following your lead through the process. I’m here for you!
